Our History

The Spring of Hope Church Of God In Christ was organized in 1980 by Reverend Talbert W. Swan, I. The church was a result of answered prayer. Missionary Sallie M. Swan prayed that God would give her children a place of worship. Through the manifestation of a God-given miracle, the Alden Baptist Church's membership voted to sell their church property to Pastor Swan after he was outbid by another congregation. Administrative Assistant Dorothy Swan Scott gave the church its name and the Spring of Hope church opened its doors in September 1980. The church has faithfully served the city and its community for nearly three decades. Spring of Hope exists in a spacious edifice and operates various ministries, which meet the needs of a diverse congregation.

In 1994, Pastor Talbert W. Swan, II, then Associate Minister at Spring of Hope Church, founded the Solid Rock Church Of God In Christ. The Solid Rock Church purchased and renovated a former bank building and purchased adjacent land for church use. The church grew numerically and faithfully served its community for fourteen years. Through the leading of the Lord, the congregations of Spring of Hope and Solid Rock merged in January 2009 and maintained the name Spring of Hope Church Of God In Christ. Pastor Talbert W. Swan, I serves as Senior Pastor and Pastor Talbert W. Swan, II as Pastor of the merged congregation.
